Stone’s Chapel Cemetery

Parson Amos M. Stone (1813-1862) gave the land for the Stone’s Chapel Cemetery. In so far as we know, Mr. Stone was the first person buried there. A building on this ground was used for a church and school. Later, a church was built just north of the cemetery and a school building was erected about 1/4 mile east on land given by John C. West. Sr.

Mr. Stone sold his land to Mr. Moses S. Grant. The church building was on the land purchased by Mr. Grant. In 1976 the heirs of Mr. Grant donated the cemetery the land from the north of the cemetery to the public road.

Beginning in December, 1975, people interested in the cemetery began the improvement of the cemetery and started a fund for the future care of the cemetery.

In April, 1976, in a survey of the graves 195 were listed, 150 of these were south of the creek. Thirty-two of the graves were before 1900. Some graves have been lost but an effort is being made to locate and mark them.
