OLD CHURCH THEATRE

The Gothic stone building that is the Old Church Theatre in Clarksville was built in the 1920's as the spiritual home of a small congregation of Red River County members of the Episcopal Church.
Regular services were held in the historic building until the 1980's when the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas closed the Church because of dwindling membership.
The Diocese deeded the building to the Red River Historical Society, but it sat empty for several years.
In 1991, the Society leased the church building to Clarksville native, Boyd Hurt, an accomplished musician and music teacher, who began featuring the Old Church Theatre concerts monthly.
Well known and established, as well as up-and-coming, musicians from all over the nation have performed at the Old Church Theatre and the list of performers already scheduled continues the new tradition of quality entertainment presented monthly at the Old Church Theatre with the generous support from individuals and business leaders in Clarksville and North Texas area.
The Old Church Theatre is brought to you in part by funding through a grant from The Texas Commission For The Arts.

Performances are held monthly on the third Saturday evening.  To see who will be appearing in upcoming performances, go to the calendar of events and click on the date that you are interested in.

Stew Cookoff

The first weekend in September, the AGRICULTURAL IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION (AIA) sponsors the Annual Red River County Stew Cookoff and Auction to help raise funds to support the annual Red River County Fair. Various organizations and individuals in the county prepare pots of stew to compete for the selection of the county's BEST STEW.

The AIA sells bowls to individuals who make the rounds sampling the various pots of stew. Normally there will be 18 to 25 pots of stew entered in the competition. In 1997 new procedures were instituted in the judging of the stew. The judging is completely blind and the cooks are not known to the judges.

The county 4-H clubs operate a SWEET SHOP, selling cookies, pies, and cakes that have been donated by individuals.

At 6 PM an auction is held in which various donated items are auctioned off. Items donated vary from cakes to quilts to hand crafted furniture. The Stew Cookoff and Auction generates funds that are used to offset the cost of the annual County Fair.

Rules for entering the Stew Cookoff are available from the County Agent's Office in the Red River County Courthouse.
